Automakers sometimes limit the feature to certain trims or change it between model years, so confirm bidirectional support on the specific vehicle before you build a plan around it.
How It Compares to Other Backup Options
Vehicle backup power is one of a few ways to keep your home running when the grid fails, and it's worth weighing against the alternatives:
- A standby generator runs on natural gas or propane and can power a home as long as it has fuel, which makes it strong for long or frequent outages.
- A home backup battery stores energy quietly, pairs well with solar, and kicks in instantly, though it holds less than most EVs.
- Vehicle-to-home uses a battery you already paid for, but it ties up your car and depends on how charged it is when the power cuts out.
