How to Winterize Your AC

Dependable Service Since 1926

Dirty air conditioning unit covered in leaves during autumn. Home air conditioning maintenance in Denver, CO.

As the winter chill settles in, it’s time to turn off the AC and get ready for winter. Although most homes have already switched over to their heating, there’s still a few steps to take with your air conditioning in Denver, CO. If you haven’t already, it’s time to winterize your AC before the weather gets any colder. A few simple steps from the team at Bell Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electrical will help your system endure the wear and tear of the cold months to make sure it’s ready to go as soon as you need it next spring.

Turn Off the Electricity

Once you’re certain that you won’t need your air conditioner for the remainder of the year, go to your power box and shut off electrical power to the AC. Cutting off the power source prevents the air conditioner from turning on again during an unusual hot spell, which could cause significant problems for the system when the weather cools down after sunset.

Clean Off the Outside Unit

The outside part of the unit is a major concern for homeowners because of its exposure to inclement weather in the fall and winter. Clear out anything and everything within 18 inches of the unit, including leaves, weeds, and similar debris.

Wait until the weather is warm enough to prevent freezing after removing everything. Next, carefully clean off the unit’s exterior, including the fan blades, using a garden hose to remove dirt and debris. It will be a smoother transition next season when you restart your system.

Inspect for Damage

While cleaning the outdoor unit, take the opportunity to closely inspect it for any signs of damage. Look over your equipment for cracks, bent fins, or rust, and ensure all components are in good condition. It’s important to address any minor issues now.

If you notice anything unusual, immediately contact the Bell team for AC repair. Before we turn the system back on in the spring, we’ll assess the damage and make necessary repairs.

Cover Your Unit

Once your AC unit is clean and dry and properly inspected, it’s time to cover it for protection against winter weather. Use a breathable, waterproof cover specifically designed for air conditioning units, which you can easily find at a home improvement store. The cover will help shield the unit from snow, ice, and debris while allowing for proper airflow to prevent moisture buildup.

Avoid using plastic or non-breathable materials to cover your AC. They can be problematic and trap condensation inside, leading to rust or mold growth. A good-quality cover ensures your unit stays safe through the worst of winter weather.

Clean Out Your Vents and Ductwork

As you prepare your AC for the off-season, don’t forget about the ductwork and vents inside of your home. They can accumulate dust, dirt, and allergens over time, which reduces air quality and system efficiency. Use a damp cloth to wipe off your vents. A vacuum can address some of the dirt and debris near your ductwork, but you’ll likely need the heating and cooling experts at Bell to come in and address your ductwork.

Call for AC and Furnace Maintenance

Fall is the perfect time to call the team at Bell to service your AC, furnace, heat pump, HVAC, or other heating and cooling system to ensure everything is working at its optimal condition. We offer inspections and tune-ups to make sure your system is in great shape when spring returns. Scheduling HVAC maintenance now also helps catch minor issues that could turn into major problems later.

Check On Your AC Unit

Winter storms can cause damage to your outdoor AC unit, even if it’s covered. After any significant snowfall or storm, take a moment to inspect the unit. Clear away any debris that may have accumulated and make sure the cover is still securely in place. Doing this periodically throughout the winter helps prevent issues like rust, blockages, or damage to the unit’s exterior.
