We have some fall home maintenance tips to help you ease into cooler weather.

  1. Allergy season is approaching

According to allergists, ragweed pollen levels usually peak around early September and continue into the middle of October. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, tips include:

    • Limit outdoor activity on high pollen count days
    • Keep windows shut and use your heating or cooling
    • Family equipment to condition your home
    • Bathe pets regularly to cleanse allergens from their fur
    • Do what you can to control ventilation, humidification, and air purification.
  1. Sprinkler season is ending

Turn off and drain sprinkler systems before the first freeze. Freezing and thawing cycles can create crakes and weak spots in the sprinkler system, triggering underground leaks.

  1. Prepare for the first freeze

If a pipe breaks, you won’t want to wait for someone to help you locate the water shut-off for your home. In most single-family homes, the shut-off valve is in the basement or crawl space near the water heater.

  1. Leave your furnace set to 65 degrees if you are leaving for a period of days, particularly if your pipes are prone to freezing
  2. Replace your furnace filter
