If you’ve never heard about this social media holiday, we’re going to share the details. We hope everyone can come together and make an effort this year to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet and save money in the process.

What is National Cut Your Energy Costs Day?

According to National Day Calendar, January 10th is now a day to keep your energy costs low and save yourself on power bills.

People across the country will be making great efforts on this day to bring down energy costs. While it seems like a small contribution to the planet, if everybody makes an effort, it could make a big difference.

As far as helping your personal finances, an entire day of minimal power use can go a long way.

How to Make an Effort on January 10th

You may be surprised at how often you begin using money-saving energy reduction methods after January 10th. As you seek ways to reduce energy use, consider the following:

Lower Your Thermostat

There are many ways to reduce energy use, but keeping your heating costs down, especially during the winter, is a huge money saver.

Change Your Furnace Filter

When your furnace filter gets dirty, your furnace has to work extra hard to heat your house. Less air blows out because the furnace gets blocked. Changing your furnace filter every 2-3 months will help keep things clean and running smoothly, which in turn may reduce your power bill.

Weatherproof Windows and Doors

Hot air escapes through cracks in windows and door frames. Sealing these areas with weatherproofing helps keep warm air in and cold air out.

You can buy weatherproofing at any hardware store, but some dollar shops even have protective plastic covers to place over windows. If there are any doors in your home that aren’t used in the winter, you can seal them too.

Wait for a Full Load

You can save a lot of energy by waiting until you have a full load of dishes or laundry before running your dishwasher or laundry machines. If you have the capacity to hang to dry indoors while it’s too cold outdoors, give it a shot. Not running your washer and dryer can greatly impact energy savings.

Switch Off

It’s easy to leave things running throughout the day, even when we’re not paying attention to them. From the television or radio to the kitchen lights. If you leave a room or aren’t using an electric appliance, switch it off.

Unplug

Do you leave your microwave, toaster, and coffee maker plugged in all day long? While they are using only minimal amounts of energy while not in use, they’re still using energy. All these small amounts of power add up over a month. On January 10th, try unplugging all the appliances when you’re not using them.

Of course, we don’t suggest you unplug your refrigerator, stover, or anything else which could cause problems being disconnected.

Call for Furnace Maintenance

Regular service on your furnace ensures everything is running smoothly, and your furnace isn’t overheating in its efforts to warm your home.

You should have your furnace inspected every once a year. Try to have it inspected before, or on January 10th to make it count toward your efforts to save on this day.
