How To Choose A New Water Heater

Dependable Service Since 1926

When shopping for a new water heater, there are several options. Consider which options would best meet the needs for your home.

Most people may think that a water heater is a water heater and there are no choices. The truth is that there are different types of water heaters available.

Common Water Heaters

These types of heaters use a tank and keep water hot in the tank.  Unless the hot water in the tank has been used up too quickly, hot water is always available instantly. The downside is that the water is kept hot, even when the hot water isn’t needed.

Tankless Systems

These types of water heaters heat the water directly as hot water is needed. A tankless system may be more efficient because it does not keep the water hot at all times.

Heat Pumps

Heat pump water heaters work in much the same way as heat pump heating and cooling systems for the home.  Instead of creating heat to heat the water, the heat pump water heater transfers existing heat to the water. These may work better in certain climates than in others.

Water Heaters With Solar Power

Just as the category suggests, these types of water heaters absorb energy from the sun to heat the water.  Especially in areas that get lots of sun, a solar powered water heater might be a very efficient way to heat the water for your home. The initial costs may be more than other types of water heaters.

Indirect Water Heating Systems

Especially in colder climates, the indirect system might prove to be the most energy efficient system of all.  An indirect water heater uses the existing heating system in the home to heat the water. With no additional energy required to heat the water, the indirect heating system is more energy efficient. Problems may arise in areas that are warm enough that heating units are not used often.

Water heaters come in electric, gas, or solar energy versions.  Each fuel type may have its own advantages in different climates and locations.  A professional water heater technician will be able to help you decide which type of water heater would be most efficient in your area.

One final consideration when choosing a new water heater is the amount of hot water that is needed in your home.  A water heater that is too small will become frustrating when hot water is not available when you need it.  On the other hand, a water heater that is too large will use more energy than necessary and cost you more to use.
