Various Plumbing Leaks, and What Causes Them

Dependable Service Since 1926

Plumbing systems can have all kinds of different issues occur over the years. The most common and potentially damaging, though, are leaks. Plumbing leaks can occur for a variety of different reasons. While you’re going to need professional services to handle most plumbing leaks, it doesn’t hurt to at least familiarize yourself with some of the reasons they occur.

Formicary Corrosion

Copper pipes are the most common kind used in modern plumbing applications. This is because they’re resistant to rust, which plagues iron plumbing pipes used in the earlier half of the 20th century. While copper pipes are more resilient, however, they are not immune to issues.

Formicary corrosion is caused by the presence of formaldehyde particles in the area around the pipe. The particles eat microscopic holes through the pipe, weakening it and causing it to become more susceptible to developing leaks. Unfortunately, there is not really a good way to prevent this from happening aside from avoiding laying pipes in areas with formaldehyde particles. The best way to deal with formicary corrosion is to schedule regular maintenance to catch leaks early.

Pitted Corrosion

Pitted corrosion is what happens when chlorine interacts with copper pipes. The chlorine eats through the copper in small, focused areas, causing tiny leaks called pinhole leaks. These leaks are especially dangerous, because they often go unnoticed until they’ve already caused quite a bit of damage. As with formicary corrosion, the best thing you can do to address pitted corrosion is to schedule regular plumbing maintenance.
