The Pros and Cons of Different Furnace Types

Dependable Service Since 1926

If you’re looking to install a new furnace in your home this winter, there are many different options to choose from. Each of these options has its own advantages to offer, and is suited to a different individual set of needs. It can be difficult to select the right furnace for your needs, when you have so many different models and factors to consider. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it alone. Have a look at a couple of the more popular furnace types below.

Gas Furnaces

Gas furnaces burn natural gas in order to generate heat, and are the most popular type of furnace in the country. Natural gas is cheap and plentiful, which is why it’s used so often as a fuel source. However, a gas furnace needs access to a city gas main in order to function properly. If you don’t have a gas line installed in your home, or don’t have access to a city gas main, you’re not going to be able to use a gas furnace.

Electric Furnaces

While not as popular as gas furnaces, electric furnaces still see widespread use across the country. Instead of combusting fuel to create heat, the electric furnace runs a current through a large heating coil. The coil has a high electrical resistance, throwing off most of the current as heat. Electricity is more expensive as a fuel source than gas is, which is why it is used less often than natural gas furnaces. However, it’s also able to function anywhere that there is sufficient power available. Electric furnaces can operate in far more different areas than natural gas furnaces can.
